ECA Teacher Workshop (VIRTUAL): Your Passport to Cultures of the World: Discover Africa, the Middle East, and India through Rhythm, Drumming, and Dance

/

As part of a free-of-charge digital artist residency, Edmonds Center for the Arts (ECA) presents a continuing education workshop called Your Passport to Cultures of the World: Discover Africa, the Middle East, and India through Rhythm, Drumming, and Dance.

Percussionist Kattam Laraki-Côté will be your guide as you discover the musical styles he perfected studying under masters from around the world. Through playing the djembe, educators will be introduced to African, Arabic, Indian, and pop rhythms, and also learn to play over “tracks” so they feel a part of a band. Finally, they will learn choreography so they can create a full performance experience with students.

Your Passport to Cultures of the World is a virtual program open to teachers, school administrators and homeschool educators.

ECA is certified by the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) as an In-Service Education Agency; participants will be eligible to earn 2 clock-hour credits.

Pre-registration required. Please contact Gillian Jones, Director of Programming, at gillian@ec4arts.org.

WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES:

Participants will learn:

– About the djembe and drumming techniques, as well as accessible rhythm activities that can be enjoyed with everyday objects;

– Various styles of rhythm (African, Arabic, Indian, pop) to support learning about diversity and world cultures;

– To play drums and dance over "tracks" to encourage motor development, teamwork, and group engagement; and

– Exercises designed to foster a love for music, discovery, and self-expression among their students.

This ECA Teacher Workshop is made possible through generous funding from the Hazel Miller Foundation and Nancy Bittner.
