Join us for an extraordinary preshow conversation between two remarkable jazz artists from different generations: Gary Hammon, a living jazz legend who pioneered the first college jazz program at the New England Conservatory of Music in the 1960s and played alongside jazz greats like Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Rollins, and Herbie Hancock; and Jahari Stampley, the winner of the 2023 Herbie Hancock International Jazz Competition and a rising star in the jazz world.

Through this intergenerational dialogue, they will explore the past, present, and future of jazz—its roots, its evolution, and where it’s headed next. Hammon will share his experiences breaking into Seattle’s jazz scene and shaping jazz education, while Stampley brings a fresh perspective on innovation in jazz today. Their conversation will also touch on Mr. Hammon’s journey as a musician and educator, shaping the next generation of jazz artists; Stampley’s debut album, Still Listening; winning the prestigious Herbie Hancock Award; Stampley’s experience as a Yamaha-endorsed artist, the unique role of organ pedals in Stampley’s performance style; and Stampley’s innovative work in beatboxing and music technology, including a piano game app and composing for animation.

Don’t miss this rare opportunity to witness two brilliant musicians exchange stories, insights, and ideas on an art form that continues to shape culture worldwide.

This event is free with registration.

*Patrons who have tickets for the 7:30PM presentation of the Jahari Stampley Trio must also register for the Pre-Show Talk if they wish to attend.
